I got shocked when I saw this video and related webpage. Is it still legal? If yes, how is it possible? Cougar population is apparently threatened and in decline.

Tomas -- I've close this because it's not clear to me what you're trying to ask. This looks more like an agenda piece than a question. I'm open to discussion about how to fix and reopen it. Catch me on chat and we'll see what we can do. As it stands, the reasons for legality of something is a politics question, not a TGO question. Whether or not the animal is endangered is a separate question, possibly more TGO appropriate, but which would need to be fixed for a more neutral tone. – Russell Steen♦ May 13 '12 at 18:45

The Arizona Game and Fish Department shows a mountain lion hunting season from August through May.

The International Union for Conservation of Nature gives the puma conservation status as Least Concern.

Well, then the question is whether the IUCN Red List reflects the real status of the population, as it is apparently declining. Just wonder how is it possible in "civilized" world that declining species is hunted like this. – Tomas May 13 '12 at 13:14
@Tomas I read the article you linked, and I see it also mentions the IUCN list, but I don't see the case for the species being threatened. This is obviously important to you; what other information do you have about this? What surveys can you point to? – Mr.Wizard May 13 '12 at 14:03

Here in Missouri, my friends are seeing them more and more. And they're pretty secretive, so most of the time that they're around you wouldn't know it. @Tomas, get off your high horse. The conservation departments are doing their best to increase populations, much to the dismay of those whose person and property are at risk. – Don Branson Jan 15 at 2:02
