comment How much vertical distance is it possible to make in a day?
Great, thank you. Do you also have an idea about the fitness aspect, ie. how many meters can an average person realistically make in a day without getting exhausted?

Not sure. (Sorry, English is not my first language.) The total number of meters that you have to go upwards. This would include the distance that you have to descend and then climb up again, so that the number can easily be much higher than the highest peak on your route. Is that vertical distance?

Why is this worth a downvote, is the question unclear? I'm not looking for records, just trying to plan a hike that's within my possibilities.

comment How do I extend the life of waterproof leather boots?
Not sure how things work in your country, but here in the Czech Republic we have companies like Restday Zlín that will take an old leather boot and if the leather is still fine, they will replace the whole sole. I don’t have a personal experience, but the pictures look convincing and people are happy about the service. The price is around a quarter of the original shoe. Seems like a reasonable option to me.

Sorry, forgot about that. No experience, I have never repaired the seams.

I don’t. I would simply not camp there.

comment Cooking by pouring hot water into plastic bags?
The manufacturer says you can microwave the bags, but the bags are only known to withstand “defrosting and reheating” temperatures, not boiling. Pouring hot water into the bag ought to be fine by this logic, but I guess that’s subjective.

I wouldn’t think about it if I could not reuse the bags. I figured that with a decent thickness they should be quite durable. Washing the pot takes time and water, and sometimes both are precious (like when sleeping in a bivy sack in the winter or rain).

comment What is the difference between Gore-Tex and Mountain Hardwears DryQ?
@Ross, sorry, no numbers. But I’m not sure if the numbers are going to play a substantial role, even after they are available. I have read and thought about various breathability and water resistance ratings for the older membranes and still can’t really imagine a practical difference between a 20/25 kg/m²/day jacket or between a 10k/20k mm jacket.

comment What makes a good head lamp?
Duracell alkaline. The drop in light output wasn’t drastic, but it was noticeable and enough to make me prefer regulated (I have Princeton Tex Quad).

Could be. It was a Tikka by Petzl.

For me the main problem is that the non-regulated lamp I had went too dim after the first 20% of the total time or so. It simply did not make good use of the batteries. And my current regulated one flashes several times when the batteries are getting low and then it keeps going for a few more minutes, giving me time to change the batteries. While I agree that the regulated mode might not be perfect for everybody, I think it's a better default than the non-regulated circuits.

comment Are there any low sodium freeze dried meals?
Given that the DRI value for sodium is somewhere around 2.3 g (source), is 800 mg per serving really that high? Especially when hiking, where it’s almost certain that you will lose some sodium from sweating?

comment What exercises are recommended to build strength for hiking?
I’m not saying that good hiker is a good runner, but running will get you into shape, which is why I think it will help to prepare for a hike.

comment Which stove fuel has best weight to bulk to heat ratio?
Mountaineering: FOTH (p. 66 in the seventh edition) says that alcohol is a poor choice because of its low heat output (= longer cooking time). No personal experience.
