My outdoor experience began when I was 18 and participated in a three week sailing expedition on the coast of Maine. From that introduction I continued pursuing the outdoors in the American Rockies, Sawtooth Mountains, Superstitions, Dragoons, Sierra Nevada, Appalachians, and am now settled in the Green Mountains.

Over my decade of experience I have completed multiple Outward Bound Wilderness expeditions, instructed for OB USA, earned a Bachelors in Outdoor Education, become certified in rock climbing, avalanche rescue, whitewater kayaking, rafting and sea kayaking.

My passions are teaching other people in the outdoors, mountain biking, rock and ice climbing, and hacking away at electronic hardware and software.

Drop me a line if you need a partner in the Northeast.

comment How can I identify edible berries/fruit from poisonous?
Following up on this answer, it is unwise and dangerous to test any wild edibles unless you are absolutely certain of their species. Some mushrooms can kill you before you get back to the parking lot, others will ruin your liver or kidneys or cause unbelievable pain. If you are an expert in one region you are not is a different region, so play it safe and find one before tasting anything. Happy hunting.

comment Washing clothes on long hikes
One solution may be to place the clothes on top of your sleeping bag, which will act as a buffer for the clothes. Or if you are in warm weather, string cord between the poles of your tent to create an inside "drying line". The 2nd suggestion will only work in temperatures above freezing of course.

comment How do I self arrest without an ice axe?
To avoid loosing your ice axe, always wear the axe leash around your wrist when outside of any flat ground terrain. Many climbing teams also carry a small spare axe for just this reason.

If the above method is used while wearing crampons in steep terrain you must not dig the crampons into the ice surface. If you do you will flip over and slide head first down the slope. If you have any metal objects in your pockets or on your person use them to dig into the ice surface. Prayer would also not be a bad idea in this very bad situation.

comment How do I know what size ice axe I should get?
For steep mountaineering the above is absolutely true. The biggest reason for the short length is dexterity at steep grades and during a self arrest. Remember that the ice axe is not a walking stick, it is a tool for cutting steps in ice, and saving your life during a fall. Long ice axes will get in the way of both of these things.

comment What precautions should I take to protect myself and my camp from bears?
One note about the bear triangle. This is the best method to keep bears away from the tent area, but the triangle must be larger than 30-60 feet. Ideally 250-350 feet in bear country, and even larger in the northern Rockies ie. Montana, Idaho, Wyoming, 500 ft from kitchen to camp to bathroom area is not unheard of. Also be sure to keep a dedicated set of clothes for cooking, because if the clothes are brought to camp they will attract bears. And don't ever bring food to the tent. Lastly, make sure the kitchen is downwind of the tent, not the other way around.

comment How do I desalinate seawater?
If no heat source is available and you have a clear plastic tarp, use the solar energy of the sun to evaporate the salt water and capture the condensation. Make sure to angle the tarp and create a wrinkle for the liquid to drain into a container.
