I am a young outdoors enthusiast with a degree in biology, specializing in botany and ecology. I have been backpacking about once a month for two years. I enjoy hiking and backpacking most, but I am open to learning about other outdoor activities. My current goal is to be ready for the AT within the next ten years.

Handling feminine hygiene on multiple-month treks? Long, long after the fact follow-up: At least for the time being, I have resorted to using a system of pads and multiple quart- and gallon-ziploc bags. Only been out a few nights at a time this way, but it has worked so far, even in bear country (at the GA/TN border in the Cohuttas). |

Will Iodine Tablets Ruin My CamelBak? 2.) Ours is yellowed, and not dark purple, but yep-- it's stained for good. I should note, though, that it's just around the edges that it's really noticeable. No cracks or bad taste or smell, just some yellowing. |

Legality of “semi-permanent” wooden structures in state and national forests in the US Is the land managed by State Park Service, National Park Service, or the National Forestry Service? They all have different rules (and I'm assuming this is in the united states) |

Are barberries edible? That's cool. What color are the berries? What month do you usually see the blooms? (Tryin' to figure out what species you might have, though I've read so far that most of them are edible.) |

Are barberries edible? Where do you live? Also, do you know which species of barberry you have near you? |

How long does mayonnaise last unrefrigerated in the back-country? @LBell: I agree, they're probably a bit over-cautious-- if we're talking about household items. I'm not sure if I'd want to take my chances in the field, though, heh. Problem is, contaminants get into it as soon as it's opened-- and heat in a nice moist container is a perfect breeding ground for bacteria. |

Am I likely to need multiple pairs of boots on the AT? Thank you! That makes a lot of sense. Thanks for providing so much detail. :) |

Am I likely to need multiple pairs of boots on the AT? I added more to the question to ask about re-outfitting/finding new shoes on the trail that do fit. Did you start off carrying those ten pairs, or did you re-supply along the trail? Did you have any trouble finding new shoes that fit so you could continue the hike? |

Where to find hiking shorts that last more than a few months? And yours have withstood blackberry brambles most admirably. |

What is the most efficient food to take a for a 12-15 day hiking trip? Sounds like the time we carried in two (small) roaster chickens for lemon/beer can chicken. That didn't turn out so well. |

How to safely carry a fixed-blade knife? If you want to consider a folding knife that can be opened with one hand, I have this assisted open knife, and I can definitely get it out and open with one hand (with practice, as the lock is solid and I have small hands): buckknives.com/…. |
