I am a young outdoors enthusiast with a degree in biology, specializing in botany and ecology. I have been backpacking about once a month for two years. I enjoy hiking and backpacking most, but I am open to learning about other outdoor activities. My current goal is to be ready for the AT within the next ten years.

Long, long after the fact follow-up: At least for the time being, I have resorted to using a system of pads and multiple quart- and gallon-ziploc bags. Only been out a few nights at a time this way, but it has worked so far, even in bear country (at the GA/TN border in the Cohuttas).

I'm not sure if I'd want to take my chances in the field, though, heh. Problem is, contaminants get into it as soon as it's opened-- and heat in a nice moist container is a perfect breeding ground for bacteria.

Did you start off carrying those ten pairs, or did you re-supply along the trail? Did you have any trouble finding new shoes that fit so you could continue the hike?
