I am a young outdoors enthusiast with a degree in biology, specializing in botany and ecology. I have been backpacking about once a month for two years. I enjoy hiking and backpacking most, but I am open to learning about other outdoor activities. My current goal is to be ready for the AT within the next ten years.

Am I likely to need multiple pairs of boots on the AT? @Greg.Ley : I did end up adding to it. Since this issue will come up while on the trail, I'd like to ask for a solution to the problem, as well. :) |

Am I likely to need multiple pairs of boots on the AT? 10-ish? Wow. Part of the reason I asked is to help calculate the projected cost of gear for a thru-hike. I had read about folks wearing classic white New Balance runners for thru-hikes, and I thought it might just be a fluke (or an exaggeration!), but this helps explain some of the stories I've heard. Thank you! |

Am I likely to need multiple pairs of boots on the AT? @Greg.Ley : Yes, that is what I was asking. It is that simple. It was a shock to me, though maybe it should not have been, and I was looking to hear from folks who had been in that sort of situation to see what really happens in the field. |

Which brands make wider hiking boot sizes? Only ones I've found are some so-so New Balance ones that are similar to the Dunhams/Durhams you already have. Most other brands, like Merrell, make insanely narrow shoes. |

How to tell the time at night +1. I especially appreciate the image of trying to stuff an astronomer into an emergency kit (hehe), and also I did not know that a first-quarter, full, or third-quarter moon could help you estimate time like that. |

How to reduce pain of wasp stings I was going to recommend that you be the one to answer this question when I saw it, and then I realized... you were the one who asked the question. Good question. |

Looking for a Topographical map resource? @ChrisBreish: Good point. I may need to look into mytopo as I tend to feel grossly unprepared w/o a map. Thanks. :) |

How do I read a topographic map? +1 especially for the first point you make. You need to keep track of where you are on a map. It's too easy for one ridge to look strikingly similar to the next. |

Are there any low sodium freeze dried meals? Going to the store, or looking online, and reading labels takes time-- but it gets the job done. ;) |

What are some good tips and techniques for packing a backpack? +1. Also, keeping things more tightly packed keeps them from shifting side-to-side. Being lopsided in weight can really mess up your day. |
