comment Does eating snow help dehydration?
@Wills -- No one said that. The question revolves around the amount of water necessary to process a calorie of energy. So for snow to dehydrate the body it would have to use more water processing calories to melt snow than water gained from the snow. That is not the case.

comment What is the most effective method to clean skin exposed to poison oak?
Well, I wouldn't say we were "aggressively abrading". It was more like using sand to rub with. Basically - grab sand, rub skin with it, rinse, repeat.

comment What is a good (and affordable) sleeping bag for someone who is beginning to backpack?
My cheap solution: rei.com/product/870764/rei-travel-sack-sleeping-bag. Tiny, fits anywhere, but it's only a 55 degree bag. Spring/Fall in Yellowstone may still have snow according to Google. Finding a compact below freezing bag under $100 will be a challenge.

comment Carrying hardboiled eggs when hiking
For what it's worth, I carry them hiking in the Southeastern US during August. I eat them on Day 2 without any issues. That doesn't mean it's "safe", just that it's worked for me so far.

comment My head torch/lamp has a red mode, why?
@DudeOnRock - I'm not clear on how this doesn't answer the question. Preservation of night vision is indeed the reason to use the red setting, as far as I know. Let's not beat up so quickly on the new users guys ;)
