Should food be in a bear bag/canister even when I'm hiking? @BenCrowell -- I wouldn't agree with that. From your link "Adult males typically weigh between 57–250 kg (130–550 lb), while females weigh 33% less at 41–170 kg (90–370 lb)". While America is obese our average female weight is not 230 pounds. You'll run into some small bears but most of them, even the females, are 200+ pounds. |

Can I get away with less advanced food storing methods if backpacking in areas where meeting bears is unlikely? In short, this is how "unlikely" areas become "problem" areas. |

What is considered a water source, and why is it recommended to camp so far from them? You should also add "attracting wildlife". While it's true that the camper can disrupt fauna, it's also true that you're much more likely to be bothered by a bear at night if you're snoozing at his watering hole. |

What are the most recommended guide/maps to bring on a PCT thru-hike? ppl -- As you can see with Guthook, the problem with this sort of question is the short shelf life. A correct answer today will likely be incorrect by next year. |
