that link appears to be broken. This is a cached copy I believe: yellowstone-bearman.com/menstruation_data.html

The claim is not just the sealed containers of toothpaste, lotion etc, but the scent of them on your hair, skin, or breath will bring bears to your campsite or into your tent. My position is that this is ridiculous, like the "women attract bears" advice that preceded it historically.

comment When should you carry a firearm when hiking/trekking?
@JimBeam "assuming the right training" - that person wouldn't be asking. See the first sentence and last paragraph of my answer.

comment What's the difference between white gas, propane, kerosene, and gasoline?
Typical Canada uses the US words for some but not all, we definitely have "Coleman fuel" which I burn in my Whisperlite.

comment What is involved in taking a canoe through a lock on a major US River?
Not saying it's hard - it probably isn't - but that it may not be necessary. Here's an article (canoeacrosscanada.ca/paddle-down-the-trent-severn-waterway) about a trip in Canada where people sometimes used the locks and sometimes portaged around them. If you set off planning to portage around them all, and then were able to go through a few, that would probably be a pleasant surprise. It's more the money/hassle that would keep me from doing it than any difficulty - going through a lock isn't difficult at all no matter how your boat is powered.

probably your best bet is to portage around the lock. There is often a fee to use locks and you may have to wait for a large boat to come through before your turn etc.

comment Tying up a tent to the sack
can you clarify what was bad? Did you not have enough room inside your pack with the tent in there? Was the load unbalanced? What problem are you trying to solve?
