comment Pack to carry two 30 L barrels
Can you provide the dimensions of the barrels? They might fit into a Duluth...

comment What should I do when caught in lightning while in my tent?
by definition, a campsite in the middle of a flat treeless plain is not a good campsite in thunderstorm season. That said, just don't touch the tent poles, and don't go outside.

do not carry liquid fuel to help you start a fire. Whether it's legal or not, it's impractical. The day's newspaper and a small amount of dry twigs should be all you need, and are far safer. I've started many a rainy-day fire without resorting to flammable liquids.

comment Do I need to hang a bear cache?
Yup. I've had a bear through my camp. The food barrels were under the (26 ft) canoe, and the bear biffed them around quite a bit. When they didn't yield, the bear left, walking right past our tents without any interest in them. More importantly, your technique does not protect you from squirrels and similar rodents, who have got into poorly hung packs and ruined some of our food in the past.

I use this approach to garden in blackfly season.

is your problem specifically flies? houseflies? blackflies? are mosquitos ok? gnats? serious question because houseflies, for example, are rare in the wilderness and common in suburbia.

comment Logic behind hikers yielding to horses?
interesting info about uphill/downhill. I was told on a safari once that leopards, cheetah etc are very bad at running up hills, while antelope etc are better. Perhaps this also applies to mountain lions and horses?

comment Is saltwater antiseptic?
Clean water with salt added to it certainly is. But ocean water full of assorted organics? Maybe not. I would rinse off actual mud with it but otherwise wait and clean the wound at home.
