Interesting point about the water melting the remaining ice. It might be the case that draining as it melts is better, but once it's all melted I think my post about keeping the water would apply. It would be good if someone would perform a test on this (maybe someone should suggest it to Mythbusters).

@JayBazuzi You can just use a sheet bend, it's essentially the same as a bowline except what would be the loop is separate ends.
