Most of my hiking experience is in the Pacific Northwest, but I've also thru-hiked the Pacific Crest Trail (2007) and the Continental Divide Trail (2011).
I would call myself a lightweight packer, but not ultralight. My packs for the PCT and CDT were around 15lbs without food, water or fuel. Weekend trips I often have a total pack weight less than 20lbs (skin out).

If I have to cross an icy, flowing river, what are some ways I can cross safely? @Vorac - I almost always hike in trail runners, which drain immediately. |

Pros and Cons of paracord What's the weight/bulk difference between say 550 paracord and your average yellow poly stuff? Everything you said is all nice, but for me, the weight is probably the key difference... |

Is it possible to sunburn through clothing? @HenrikHansen true, but fabric designed to have high UPF can definitely be thin/breathable and still provide excellent protection |

What is the proper way to tarp tent to avoid condensation? Rory - what modern materials are you referring to? I've never owned a tent made of breathable fabric, and in North America they are mostly restricted to a handful of mountaineering tents (usually Epic or eVent fabrics). In my experience, tent flys are 100% non-breathable. |

How can I improve on the straps on my travel pack? I'm surprised the buckle won't hold without the clasp. |

What is the most suitable cooking equipment to use for a long duration in central asia countries? My bet would be that gas or kerosene is much more commonly available. Thus, a stove like a MSR Whisperlite International is often the goto for this type of trip. |

What is the most suitable cooking equipment to use for a long duration in central asia countries? I think the biggest question is: how available is alcohol on this type of trip? Most alcohol stoves are only efficient with certain types and in my North American experience, they are generally available only in car part shops and large gas stations. Is the same true in Turkmenistan? |

How can I keep my iPhone going on a multiday hike? I was looking that over a few days ago - I found it suspiciously lacking in the hard details of how it would perform... most other chargers I've dealt with offer a pretty straightforward table of "charge for X minutes for Y% of battery for an iPhone Z". I hope that this thing does turn out to be great though! |
