Most of my hiking experience is in the Pacific Northwest, but I've also thru-hiked the Pacific Crest Trail (2007) and the Continental Divide Trail (2011).
I would call myself a lightweight packer, but not ultralight. My packs for the PCT and CDT were around 15lbs without food, water or fuel. Weekend trips I often have a total pack weight less than 20lbs (skin out).

What is the minimum gap needed for a windscreen on a cat can stove? does your windscreen have holes around the bottom edge? |

How can I keep my iPhone going on a multiday hike? @whatsisname if you're not a photographer, an iPhone 4+ camera takes excellent pictures considering all the other functionality it provides (and pretty damn light too). Obviously it's no DSLR, but it is surprisingly good! |

Cooking by pouring hot water into plastic bags? ...Except that I've done it literally hundreds of times (added boiling water to a ziplock) and never had it melt :) |

Cooking by pouring hot water into plastic bags? I dunno, you can microwave ziplock bags (according to them), so how dangerous can it be to add hot water to them? I suppose if you were concerned though, there are other brand bags that expressly support boiling water, i.e. "FoodSaver" bags. |

How are sleeping bag temperature ratings determined? I think the advantage of the system is that once you establish where you fit on the spectrum, you would be able to buy bags from any manufacturer with that knowledge... For buying your first bag, I agree - likely useless :) |

Will any filter/pump purifier last through longer hikes? how often did you have to clean it? does it clog if you use silty/dirty water? |

Will any filter/pump purifier last through longer hikes? I can't help you on this one - I have always preferred Aquamira to fiddling with filters. I have vaguely heard of thru-hikers liking gravity filters like this one (Sawyer Inline): rei.com/product/801824/sawyer-3-way-inline-water-filter |
