Most of my hiking experience is in the Pacific Northwest, but I've also thru-hiked the Pacific Crest Trail (2007) and the Continental Divide Trail (2011).

I would call myself a lightweight packer, but not ultralight. My packs for the PCT and CDT were around 15lbs without food, water or fuel. Weekend trips I often have a total pack weight less than 20lbs (skin out).

how often did you have to clean it? does it clog if you use silty/dirty water?

I can't help you on this one - I have always preferred Aquamira to fiddling with filters. I have vaguely heard of thru-hikers liking gravity filters like this one (Sawyer Inline): rei.com/product/801824/sawyer-3-way-inline-water-filter

when your tent is soaked, you might strap it to the outside...

comment How long does mayonnaise last unrefrigerated in the back-country?
Consider buying a crate of single serve mayo packets? Shelf life is a year and a cursory amazon search shows $23 for a box of 200 :)

Seems impossible with no recharge? I mean, turn it off... that'll make it last :)

Yeah, fair enough - I think the Q specified that money wasn't an object, so I rolled with that. There are definitely reasonable budget-conscious alternatives!

GoLite falls below the listed companies IMO - bags are a bit heavier for the same temp rating, people seem to find their ratings to be optimistic too, and the half-center zips are weird/not ideal for the wide range of temperatures seen on a thru-hike.

For extra anti-class, it's very easy to drink directly from the bladder :)
