A guy who is into a little bit of everything...music (listening and making it), photography, DIY, technology, the outdoors (hiking, backpacking, climbing...), and trying to live by grace through faith. I also currently work at a high adventure camp in the Southeast where I also do a little bit of everything...

comment Where to buy ethanol in Canada?
Canada is a large country, and store inventories can vary greatly. I suggest a reworking of your question to help get some answers. And by the way, Everclear is 100% ethanol, which can be purchased at liquor stores. Denatured alcohol is ethanol with some additives so that it can't be ingested, and can be purchased at most hardware and home improvement stores.

comment Painful leather hiking boots - persevere or give up?
There's some good advice below, but if I was in your shoes (ha ha) I would sell these boots on eBay (or equivalent) before I invested any more time, money, and pain into them and just use that money toward a properly fitting pair of boots. So...I guess that is giving up. Sorry.

Just throwing this out there, but could they have used or still use rock cairns as trail markers?

comment Trekking poles: what are the pros and cons of Anti-shock vs standard designs?
@BenCrowell - That may be, but I know that on my last trip where I borrowed some poles I found them almost indispensable for my knees compared to the previous trip without. So I know there is at least something to them. That's the only reason I'm now interested in them after years of thinking they were just another "accessory."

comment Is it safe to use denatured alcohol as an antiseptic?
@BenCrowell - That's an understandable question, but would you put gasoline in your wound? I certainly wouldn't. The denatured alcohol is tantamount to that. I just can't see any potential benefit outweighing the risk of pouring hazardous chemicals into an open wound.
