A guy who is into a little bit of everything...music (listening and making it), photography, DIY, technology, the outdoors (hiking, backpacking, climbing...), and trying to live by grace through faith. I also currently work at a high adventure camp in the Southeast where I also do a little bit of everything...

comment Do bag liners add the same warmth value to all sleeping bags?
I don't think it's reasonable to trust that a liner would actually add the claimed 15° (or other number) to any sleeping bag no matter the bag's temperature rating, even though I know they do add some insulation. I'd maybe count on getting about half of what is put on the label. Liners to me are more about preserving the insulation in the bag itself so that it stays cleaner longer and thus maintains its insulating capacity longer.

I think this makes sense. Thermodynamics is the same backpacking or not. However I wish we had a way to confirm this by testing. The real question to me though is does it truly provide the indicated 15° boost. My guess is that figure is more marketing than real R-value.

comment How to find a secluded cabin to rent
I'm thinking the folks at the Travel Answers SE might possibly be better able to answer this question. As it stands it's ambiguous enough to maybe fit here, but certainly leans towards 'travel' over 'great outdoors'. That's my two cents anyway.

comment How to Clean Rock-Climbing Shoes
Just a word of caution from experience: drying wet, leather climbing (or other) shoes with heat will cause the leather to shrink some. So unless you want a smaller size, I recommend just using the fan or other air movement.

Define clean: just get rid of the smell, or also get rid of all the dirt and grime accompanying the odor?
