comment How safe is drinking distilled water?
Water, purified enough, cannot be distributed through stainless steel pipes. Instead, they use glass pipes to transport it within the plants where it's made. Obviously, the purified water that most people will encounter is quite harmless, because it's not really all that pure.

On the caustic part, no. My Dad's a chemical engineer who used to make calls on a plant that made lab-grade distilled water. Here's a description of the Z machine, with links to distillation and de-ionization that's used to prepare the water: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Z_machine

That should be fine. I'm not a doctor or microbiologist or anything, though. :) Besides, you're cooking the fish later, and that should kill anything that does grow on it.

I guess that depends how you're going to transport them. If you bleed them and then move them, you'll need to keep the dirt off, and probably keep them cool, too.

I've bled them when I got back home after carrying a stringer a couple miles in the heat. Never had a gamey fish.

comment Should I expect reptiles in Southwest USA deserts in winter?
I don't have much direct experience hiking in the southwest - just Philmont, New Mexico in 1978. But, reptiles probably have similar patterns across the US, and here in the Midwest they try to avoid people. They'll feel the vibrations of your footsteps and leave. Don't reach into holes where they might live, "step heavy" when you walk through places where the weeds are high bordering the trail, and that should do the trick. But, they are wild animals and are not entirely predictable.

comment How to deal with a rifle scope where the relief is too short?
It's a Simmons 44 Mag; I've applied 1 & 2 to the extent that the huge bell and rings will allow. Good answer, though.
