comment What is the fastest style of sled?
Who cares if it's a real sport? it's fun! I'm like an adult in certain ways, and it's still fun. :) But - it depends what you're sledding on. The fastest sled on snow might not be the fastest sled for ice.

comment Buying a Backpacking Knife
Good question. The first backpacking knife I bought was lightweight, but too small. I've started using a larger one. Also, all knives will need to be sharpened sooner or later. Abusing a knife will cause it to need sharpening sooner, but even a properly-used knife will need sharpening from time to time.

Point taken! Best follow their mandate.

The reason I ask is that bears vary in their fearlessness of humans. Given that, you may not really have to limit yourself to what fits in a bear canister by hanging food and good outdoor practices, such as not cooking where you camp. Having said that, the areas I hike have very limited bear populations.

What kind of bears? What area are you hiking in?

I'm assuming this is all in prep for your NZ trip. You'll give a trip report afterwards, I hope. I'd like to hear all about it.

Solid answer. And once the lion is gone, change into some dry shorts. ;)

Not only do you contain a fair amount of meat, you may be the first meat meat they've seen in a while. :(

comment What is the proper way to tarp tent to avoid condensation?
Also, I think I would consider the blue poly dark, at least compared to my grey tarp (see my post). Might be the difference in materials, too, I'm not sure. The Ray Way tarps are very thin silicone-coated nylon.

The picture you post shows a tarp pitched with the sides touching the ground. If you do this, you're eliminating the ventilation benefits of the tarp. Better ventilation will mean less condensation. There's no need to pitch it low in a heavy rain, unless they're accompanied by string winds.

Now that I think about it, the time when I had the condensation was when I set it up in the back yard, over the grass, because I knew a heavy rain was coming and I wanted to see if the seams were really sealed.

And you know, we could ask MythBusters to test this, but I wouldn't want to lose my tent in the explosion. :) It would be a simple experiment, though, so I'm inclined to make it a weekend project, or maybe over Christmas break.

@LBell - Unsubstantiated? I beg to differ - I read it on StackExchange. ;)
