comment When is it too cold for Tarping?
@LBell - Unsubstantiated? I beg to differ - I read it on StackExchange. ;)

comment What is the proper way to tarp tent to avoid condensation?
Okay, that explains why my light gray tarp tends to get less condensation. I vaguely recall Ray J. mentioning this in selecting tarp color.

comment Is a varied diet necessary while backpacking?
+1, but leave the white rice at home. It has almost all the nutrients removed, so it's empty carbs. Plus, it hits the body too fast since it's too easy to digest. I use brown rice instead. It takes longer to absorb and still has nutrients. Mostly, though, it's about the absorption rate.

comment Is it dangerous to sleep in a tent alone in a forest in -20?
@Mia - one thing on the plus side of what you're doing is that you're only 1km from safety. If it got really bad, you could pack up, walk out, and wake your friends sleeping in their warm beds. Still, -20 is really, really cold.

@whatsisname - this is easier when you're a guy who uses a tarp instead of a tent. I just kneel at the downhill end of the tarp, and it saves a some hassle.

comment Tips for hunting nocturnal deer
@Russell, don't taunt the trolls, it just agitates them. There's nothing wrong with hunting, there is with "blasting away." Equating the two illuminates ignorance or inability to comprehend.

comment Do iodine water treatment tablets have negative effects?
Banned in Europe, eh? That's hilarious. Yep, chlorine is quite toxic. So is Vitamin A, but in small amounts it's a good thing. I switched to a Sawyer Filter for 2012, and I'm VERY happy with it. I still carry iodine as a backup in case something goes wrong with the filter.

comment What can be safely trimmed on a backpack
Sticking with strap-trimming makes sense to me - and when you say "notoriously difficult to repair," add to that the probability that the pack would fail when you're deep in the woods, and not at home where it would be convenient. You do carry duct tape right? I carry some wrapped around one of my water bottles for emergency repairs.

comment How to seam seal Tyvek?
I used GE's Silicone Gel II to seal seams on my RayWay tarp, and it works great. I have no idea if it would stick to Tyvek or not, but it seems like it would.

comment Why don't we apply the principles of layering when it comes to pants?
They're less sensitive, and you don't have organs there. Keeping your core warm is the top priority of your body's response to cold. Also, if you're hiking, your legs are staying plenty warm just from the heat of the working muscles.

+1 I had no idea that a candle lantern could add that much heat. Good tip.
