comment Are drop bears dangerous ?
Don't be afraid of Drop Bears. They're attracted to your raisin peelers. If you throw your raisin peelers down and run, you can save your self from harm.

comment What parks are still open during the US government shutdown?
@Sdry - Normally, if you enter closed government land when it's closed, that's trespassing.

comment Venomous/Semi-Venoumous Snakes at Higher Altitudes
Reptiles are cold-blooded. They're not going to be active on or near the snow.

Agreed. It's just common courtesy.

comment Carry a larger water bottle or a smaller water bottle for backpacking?
@Steed. Okay. Well, my gear for extended trips is about 5.5kg, so that'd be a lot of food to get to 20. Four days' worth would bring me up to about 10.5kg. Many of the long-haul hikers that are doing 3-4 month trips carry about the same weight or less, and re-supply every 4-6 days. Still, if you have to carry food for two weeks, I can see that you could easily get into to 20kg range.

@Vorac When backpacking, I wouldn't have either, because of weight.

comment How dangerous is a band of coyotes to a lone, unarmed human?
Years ago I saw a "wild" coyote that people had fed around the Grand Canyon area. I'm sure they eventually had to kill it because people had fed it.

So, I only call when I'm near a vehicle and can get in if they approach. :) And yes, they're wild animals, definitely don't try to approach them. People do, to, so it's worth saying.

I've never had a problem with them, either. It's fun calling to evoke a response. Nevertheless, looking to see if anyone's experience a threat from them.

Where'd you get the 20-30kg figure?

comment How can I boost morale on long backpacking trips?
Oh, also, singing on the trail. When I'm solo hiking I sing. It lifts morale and scares the bears and pigs. Actually, my singing scares most any living thing. :)

comment Is caffeine helpful or hurtful when backpacking?
Caffeine is dehydrating, but it seems like a small amount isn't going to be much of a problem. Some of the long-distance hikers drink coffee, and still perform well.

Nothing like having company. How about swapping stories before hitting the sack?

comment What foods should I avoid when backpacking?
I avoid dehydrating foods, like power bars. I focus on carbs from whole grain products like wheat pasta, protein from meat (tuna packets and the like) and fats (cheese, for example). These supply you with short-, medium-, and long-term energy.

comment Carry a larger water bottle or a smaller water bottle for backpacking?
You have to take into account distance between water sources and weather, among other things. I carry four one-liter bottles, and fill what I'll need plus an extra for a safety margin.

comment Is playing musical instruments like Harp/Harmonica, Flute unsafe during backpacking trips?
I would think that anything like an instrument is going to sound out-of-place to animals, perhaps even distinctly human, and they'll avoid the area, unless some stronger motivation draws them in, like cooking food.
