I live and breath in Banff National Park in the Canadian rockies, where I hike, camp, ski (downhill, x-country, touring), snowshoe, scramble and play.

I've camped in the winter in -40c, I've travelled across glaciers and mountain passes both solo and in groups, I enjoy solo camping in the backcountry, and I spent seven years in the military.

My favourite moments are being in the middle of nowhere, with nobody around me, in the middle of the night under a sheet of stars, listening to nothing other than the ringing in my ears.

Unless you're going commando you're already wearing two layers.

comment Are there significant behaviour differences among bear species to adopt different safety rules?
I complete agree with Russell, play dead until it bites, then fight back. Also, bring bear spray when travelling in the woods.

I can confirm in the Canadian Forces we did similar (sleeping bag liner inside sleeping bag inside arctic sleeping bag with hot water bottles inside).

comment Performance of fur garments?
A big difference between fur and down/synthetic/synthetic fur is that fur has a leather backing, usually adding considerable weight.

And for the record, my current winter shoes are Scarpa Crux approach shoes with wool socks.

I was paid to wear army boots and I can assure you that they weren't good in cold weather. Wool socks definitely make a big difference, but all the militaries have significantly revamped their army boots in the last ten years because they realized their footwear was behind the times.

comment Winter food : Should I change my habits for winter?
Energy bars are a good example of a food which turns to rock in cold temperatures. Keep a bar in an interior pocket of your jacket or be prepared to break a tooth.

comment Forecasting the weather in the wilderness
Above and beyond the "red sky at night, sailor's delight" type of forecasting, there are some tried and true techniques. See my post for examples.

comment What's the difference between a 2, 3, 4, and 5 season tent?
I slightly disagree in regards to 4 seasons tents and vent flaps. The fly won't have flaps, but the inside tent will usually have a panel in the ceiling that can be opened to let out moisture in warm temperature areas.

Also, if you smell the earth a lot more or start hearing the trees a lot more that's usually a good sign of an oncoming storm. I've heard swamps release gasses before storms because of the low pressure.
