comment How can I prevent plantar fasciitis?
I got some OluKai sandals from REI, and they are by far the most comfortable sandals I have ever had. They are not flat like most sandals, and actually have arch support. That being said, I don't do any extended walking in them, and cannot attest to how they would stand up to miles at a time.

comment How can I make a footprint?
+1 once I get more votes. Good note about melting edges of tarp. If you just cut most tarps, they will fray and unravel.

comment What are the downsides to sleeping in a hammock on a multi-day hike?
That's why you would use something like the hennessy hammock. They come with tarps for hanging above you for bad weather. hennessyhammock.com/catalog/#hammock They even have cold weather tests. hennessyhammock.com/articles/cold_weather_camping

comment How do I prevent blisters in ski boots?
I'm not convinced snow boots are significantly different from hiking boots as far as blister prevention goes. Reduce friction and keep your feet dry.

comment Will a tent provide some protection from bears?
+1 for the psychological aspect. Even if it isn't necessarily safer, you can feel safer in a tent which leads to more rest, etc.
