What should I do when I'm lost? +1 for staying put, especially if you're lost due to vehicle accident or breakdown. If you're really lost, you don't know if wandering around is taking your closer or further away from help. |

What should you do if you are bitten by a rattlesnake? I wonder if it's not better to generalize and ask "What should you do if you're bit by a (poisonous) snake?" |

Folding versus fixed blade knives The fixed blade is the Becker Eskabar. It's a hybrid of the Becker BK11 and the Esee Izula. eseeknives.com/eskabar.htm If I was buying again, I think I would just go for the Izula though as I prefer the blade on the Izula slightly. Not enough to justify another purchase however. |

Which side of an emergency blanket should I use? They have different sides?! All the ones I have seen are silver on both sides, I'm thinking the orange might be there for signaling? Although I would think that the silver would work pretty well for that. |

Does hiking with a dog in bear country increase or decrease your risk of a bear encounter? I don't know that it is true that a bear has no fear of a dog. I have seen bears run from cats even. Of course it will depend on the type and temperament of the bear. |

Serrated vs flat-edge knives Let me quantify that then, they are much more difficult to sharpen if all you have is a whetstone. |

How do I tie a Prusik knot? Friction I could see, but the weight is still being put entirely on the two ends coming away from the knot. Thanks! |

What things should I look for when buying a compass? I don't know about anyone else, but I like my compass to point north. |

How do I tie a Prusik knot? I've used the first two steps a number of times. Is there much benefit to the additional loops? |

How much water should be carried while hiking in the desert? @LBell The same site also says "Drink one-half to one full quart of water or sports drink each and every hour you are hiking in the heat." At the one liter per hour mark, a gallon only lasts four hours. |

How much water should be carried while hiking in the desert? One gallon seems low to me as well. For the desert section of the PCT, most recommendations I see are to carry at least six liters, and many recommend eight plus liters. I don't know that I would feel comfortable leaving sight of civilization with only one gallon :D |
