comment Hiking boots vs trail shoes
I think it's the way the boots fit, even though they are the right size. I have tried different types of socks, from wool to synthetic materials. Even the double sock method doesn't seem to help.

comment What steps should I take if someone starts sinking?
I read this as "What to do if someone starts stinking", which is just a natural part of hiking :D

I may just need to try another boot. I didn't go cheap, but there might be some incompatibility in the shape of these that my feet don't like.

I definitely can feel some ankle strain when hiking down steep inclines over an extended period of time. I will have to try my boots for that to see if it is improved.

comment Should I get trekking poles for snowshoeing, or stick with ski poles?
Most trekking poles have baskets as well. The leki poles I have also have replaceable baskets, so you can change the size based on the terrain. They also, as you mentioned, collapse for storage and adjust height for going up vs down hill.

comment What is the most efficient food to take a for a 12-15 day hiking trip?
I would also recommend something along these lines. Plenty of carbs during the day to keep you going, higher fat content meals at night to keep you sustained while you sleep. Don't forget the protein to keep your muscles fed.
