comment What are essential items in an emergency kit?
It all depends on how far you are straying away from your creature comforts. If you're just going to gather water from the stream and have your camp setup already, you obviously don't need to bring a sleeping bag. I'd say the whistle is the most important piece in that situation if you're out with others.

comment What is the best way to store my sleeping bag for long periods of time?
I have an old hockey bag that I keep my sleeping bag in. It protects it from dust/moisture without compressing it and damaging the loft.

comment What style crampon should I use for my hiking boots and how do I adjust them?
Can I ask what type of microspikes you're currently using? I asked a question on Quora and was recommended these: rei.com/product/774966/kahtoola-microspikes-traction-system

comment How can you navigate / determine your location in thick fog?
I like your technique for following along a bearing in the first paragraph, but I'd argue that you shouldn't just wander around to try and find landmarks -- you never know where you'll end up and you'll probably just exacerbate the problem.

comment Hiking boots vs trail shoes
Excellent question. I've been hiking in trail shoes rather than boots for some time now since they're lighter, easier, etc. But I was wondering if I was putting myself at risk...

comment What are good knots to know for camping and backpacking?
@mjrider hadn't heard of the Taught Hitch until you/Kevin. It seems like a stronger version of the noose, which is cool! I skipped the clove hitch because, while useful, it can also come apart pretty easily if you don't understand how to use it, so I wanted to keep things simple.

comment How much water should be carried while hiking in the desert?
Interesting. I'll defer to your experience here, but I've usually heard 1 liter per hour recommended, so a gallon seems a bit low.

revised How can I be absolutely sure my fire is safely extinguished?
Removed "Is it even legal?" since that's broad and ambiguous.

comment How to reduce the annoying sound of falling raindrops on a tent?
Ahh yes, missed that bit :) I feel like a plastic tarp would be louder than a nylon rain fly though. But if it's worked for you, that's awesome!

...wouldn't there be the sound of the rain on the tarp?
