I'm an engineer in the solar industry, and help run a small workshop cooperative in Boulder, CO. I'm fond of taking things apart, fixing things that are broken, and doing things that everyone says you can't do.
Niels Bohr said, "An expert is a person who has found out by his own painful experience all the mistakes that one can make in a very narrow field." - I can proudly say that in a number of fields I am well on my way.

What is the effect of changing side and edge bevel on ski edges? What do you mean by de-tuning? I've never really understood what I was supposed to do to the first few inches to "de-tune" it. |

Starting cross-country skiing off trails I do NOT like the taste of dem apples. That does sound like a nice light solution if weight is a priority. |

Starting cross-country skiing off trails Ok, I admit this is a good choice too, but you'll have to choke me with a compression strap to get me to give up my skins. EDIT: Question, where do you end up for total weight (skis, bindings, boots) for a setup like this? |

Starting cross-country skiing off trails Oh good, I was getting scared! My standard winter backpacking kit (no clothing) is about 20lbs. I always expect to carry more equipment in the winter than the summer - any extra energy I expend on the way out I get back on the comfortable ride down. |

Starting cross-country skiing off trails 16lbs? Including boots and layers for 15F? That is either an exaggeration or extremely impressive. |

How do you sharpen a hand chain saw? Thanks for the video addition. You can grip the chain directly in a vise, just don't crank it down too hard. I know that is a bit vague, but when you've got it gripped, you can tell when you are about to crush something. Use rubber vice pads if you are uncertain. The sharpening will go a bit slower because you won't be able to hold it as tightly as a chainsaw bar (and hence, you'll need to take lighter passes with the file), but it will still work. |
