I am a young outdoor professional from Colorado. I have had the privilege of growing up with a father who loves the outdoors and taught me what he knew. I have worked as a guide, educator, and leader for the past 7 years, and received my B.A. in Adventure Education from Fort Lewis College. I love many outdoor sports, but my focus areas are rock and ice climbing, mountaineering, backpacking, and skiing. I'm still learning a lot, so I'm happy to be part of an open community like this one. Thanks for reading!

comment Will boiling be enough to decontaminate standing water from pathogens and toxins?
I'd be interested to hear what about the water is unsafe, aside from pathogens, and whether a method exists to "destroy the toxins," whatever they may be.

comment How much garlic in the mountain kitchen?
The skeptic in me is unhappy with placing information from a naturopath on a site based on objective answers. I don't see there being anything wrong with eating lots of garlic, but I'd like to see some serious sources here if we are effectively claiming that garlic can "prevent colds and flu, stimulate circulation..." and so on.

comment Would a tampon be a good addition to a survival kit
It is certainly uncommon, but I once provided a tampon to a girl's group that was camping nearby when they happened to run out of them.

revised Does a red headscarf or hat provide better protection from the sun?
Fixed grammar, spelling, and changed "sunstrike" to "sunburn." Assuming non-native English speaker.

comment Do I need to worry about feral dogs or even wolves if I camp in random areas while hitchhiking in Georgia (the country)?
@RussellSteen - I didn't say feral dogs are zero risk, I said that wolves are zero risk. Big difference! I can see how my sentence structure was somewhat ambiguous in that separation.

comment Is a varied diet necessary while backpacking?
I would love to hear from someone on real protein needs. A NOLS blog post discusses research showing a loss of muscle mass (and fat) after NOLS courses. Seems like an interesting place to start with nutrition.

comment Are Trangia and MSR fuel bottles inter changeable?
Thanks for sharing the info on the Trangia bottles. I didn't know they weren't metal, and you answered the pressure question posed above. Interesting that you mention alcohol corroding MSR bottles, because I've known many people who carry alcohol in MSR bottles, and have done so for years. Perhaps those bottles are no longer safe for pressurized use? I wonder if someone has tested that.

comment How can I locate lanes where I can legally drive a 4x4 in the UK?
@HorusKol - Interesting. I'm not familiar with "green-laning." Are you saying that this question is akin to asking whether one can ride their bike/4x4/scooter/whatever in a Wilderness area or national park in the US? Because that would be a totally legit access question in my mind.
