I am a young outdoor professional from Colorado. I have had the privilege of growing up with a father who loves the outdoors and taught me what he knew. I have worked as a guide, educator, and leader for the past 7 years, and received my B.A. in Adventure Education from Fort Lewis College. I love many outdoor sports, but my focus areas are rock and ice climbing, mountaineering, backpacking, and skiing. What are the most important indicators of an high-risk avalanche zone? Be aware that snow settling (making that "whumphing" sound) doesn't always indicate a dangerous avy zone, but a dangerous avy condition in general. Whumphs can be seen/heard long before you are anywhere near avy terrain. |

How to stay clean on a multi-day hike? These are probably what I'd write also. I can't use alcohol because my skin is very dry to begin with, and this seems to make it worse. Personally I use baby wipes with a dash of hot water. Helps the smell, and for a short trip I don't mind the ounces. I second the Dr. Bronners, too. |
