Justin is the lead developer at SpedWare LLC. He oversees development of all databases and Web applications. While in college, Justin was recognized in national and international competitions for embedded software architecture and mathematical modeling.
Justin is active in the community, serving as both a United Way Campaign Account Manager and a Healthy Community Council member since 2007. As part of JMU's College for Kids, Justin has taught Video Game Design courses for 10-13 years olds.
When he's not programming, Justin enjoys listening to all forms of music and spending as much time outdoors as possible, an interest he developed while earning his Eagle Scout award.

Selecting backpacking cooking pot – teflon, aluminum, steel, titanium, or cast iron? @Don - my scoutmasters would pick one short hike a year so they could pack a cast iron dutch oven and make a cobbler. It's a rare treat that can convince 13 year-olds to carry extra weight! |

Energy bars for outdoors activities: what are the important criteria? @Amine - the point I was making is a solid answer that fits the guidelines of this site is difficult without that additional information. If you want to know which is best for each situation you could make multiple questions. If you just want a list of things to consider in an energy bar that doesn't exactly fit the purpose of this site. Great question, just trying to get more information so answers can be more directed. |

Energy bars for outdoors activities: what are the important criteria? If you question is only for hiking I think you should add that to your question (I know you have it tagged). I say this because different activities have different needs. The amount of protein, the weight, and quality of taste will depend for me on the activity. I will take a better tasting heavier bar hiking where backpacking I want light and tons of protein, regardless of the taste. |

Is it safe to use water purification tablets after their expiration date? Chlorine I know slowly turns into a gas, evaporating away. Not sure specifically about iodine. Truthfully, I thought this forum wouldn't need scientific explanation, only the necessary info for someone enjoying the Great Outdoors. |

Soft or hard drinking bottle? +1 from me for a lot of good remarks that I missed. Not sure I agree though on the break point of a hard bottle. The pressures that we're talking about I don't think get anywhere near enough to break a nalgene bottle or equivalent. I'm thinking of a person falling on their pack. Maybe someone accidentally stepping on the bottle. Those kinds of pressures. |

Where can I find an iodine crystal water purification product? @Patrick - thanks for the suggestion. I use tablets and have an REI membership. Tablets work, but I still remember fondly the days when I had my Polar Pure. Been some updates from Polar Pure since I wrote this question but still no solution. |

Campsites in Virginia which allow alcohol? I see the votes to close, but I would like someone to explain them in the comments. I agree this is near the limits of our questions (not very GREAT outdoors if you can bring a case of beer) but I don't know a better SA site for this question and I could see it being useful. The Northern VA area has tons of great camping, some private and some public. I don't know which ones allow drinking but I would be interested in knowing. +1 |

What should I do if I break a shoelace in the wilderness? Do they make mini rolls? If not, a full roll of duct tape is WAY too heavy for hiking. |

Forecasting the weather in the wilderness fwiw - I carry a small emergency weather radio when backpacking. One that uses a crank for electricity instead of batteries so it's pretty light. Some of the worst storms give very little notice of how bad they will be. |

Where can I find an iodine crystal water purification product? Thanks, that's a pump and there are equivalent pumps that can be bought in the US. One of the big upsides of Polar Pure was the extreme ease of use. Nothing really to clean, maintain, etc. |
