comment Campsites in Virginia which allow alcohol?
I see the votes to close, but I would like someone to explain them in the comments. I agree this is near the limits of our questions (not very GREAT outdoors if you can bring a case of beer) but I don't know a better SA site for this question and I could see it being useful. The Northern VA area has tons of great camping, some private and some public. I don't know which ones allow drinking but I would be interested in knowing. +1

comment What should I do if I break a shoelace in the wilderness?
Do they make mini rolls? If not, a full roll of duct tape is WAY too heavy for hiking.

comment Forecasting the weather in the wilderness
fwiw - I carry a small emergency weather radio when backpacking. One that uses a crank for electricity instead of batteries so it's pretty light. Some of the worst storms give very little notice of how bad they will be.

comment Where can I find an iodine crystal water purification product?
Thanks, that's a pump and there are equivalent pumps that can be bought in the US. One of the big upsides of Polar Pure was the extreme ease of use. Nothing really to clean, maintain, etc.

comment Formula for rough amount of water to carry on hike?
+1 great general rule. One thing I would add is to know the humidity of where you are. I live in the VA/NC region and when I took a trip backpacking in New Mexico I had to consume an extra liter a day at the least.

comment Is it illegal to remove rocks from a riverbed in the UK
In the US it is illegal. If the riverbed is in a protected park then the rocks are protected like plants. If the riverbed is on private property it is legal with the property owners permission.

+1 for scout training, that is exactly what I learned in Philmont.

comment What is the proper way to tarp tent to avoid condensation?
Did you use a ground cloth underneath you besides your sleeping pads? I prefer to pitch tarps instead of tents, but I have never tried it like your link to joeldare, that is without a ground cloth. I mostly hike VA and NC Appalachians though, maybe out west you can get by without.

comment How do I extend the life of waterproof leather boots?
I had a sole partially detach around the heel of an old pair of gore-tex boots. ShoeGoo would give me another 50 miles before detaching again. That is backpacking in the Appalachians, I'm sure weather has a lot to do with it.

comment How can I tell when pemmican has spoiled?
from my experience, after 3-4 days of eating pemmican, it all looks wrong, and tastes wrong, but that has nothing to do with it spoiling. Good luck!
