comment What is the proper way to tarp tent to avoid condensation?
Did you use a ground cloth underneath you besides your sleeping pads? I prefer to pitch tarps instead of tents, but I have never tried it like your link to joeldare, that is without a ground cloth. I mostly hike VA and NC Appalachians though, maybe out west you can get by without.

comment How do I extend the life of waterproof leather boots?
I had a sole partially detach around the heel of an old pair of gore-tex boots. ShoeGoo would give me another 50 miles before detaching again. That is backpacking in the Appalachians, I'm sure weather has a lot to do with it.

comment How can I tell when pemmican has spoiled?
from my experience, after 3-4 days of eating pemmican, it all looks wrong, and tastes wrong, but that has nothing to do with it spoiling. Good luck!

comment Am I likely to need multiple pairs of boots on the Appalachian Trail?
One thing to note, but it's not a full answer. The cushioning inside a boot usually breaks down before the outside of the boot comes apart. In those cases you can continue to use the broken in shell of a boot, but replace the internal cushioning and get more use out of them.

@pulsehead - that's a great idea but I just don't have the time. Part of getting ready is a financial thing, and part is a physical thing, which leaves very little time on my end to blog. There is a tremendous amount of information online though, so most aspects of preparing have been covered many times.

comment Which brands make wider hiking boot sizes?
that is why I didn't make it an actual answer. I got my last pair of Merrell boots from Zappos because of the free return policy. I have long and narrow feet and struggle to find boots that fit well, so I tend to go through a few before I settle on one and at size 14 I rarely find stores that carry enough supply at my size.

I don't know which brands are good at that width, but zappos lets you search their database based on width. The following link is supposed to be for 2E and up: zappos.com/mens-shoes~oS

Is that available in the US? Their website does not list the US.

comment How to treat shin splints while backpacking
he did use the words, "my personal, probably body-destroying dosage". I'm 6'4" and around ~200 pounds as well. If I was in pain and needed to get out of the woods safely, I would not hesitate to use that dosage, I would just be sure to stop as soon as it was possible.
