@Mr.Wizard, citing this article is talking about the bowline, which is known to be unsafe, and a different (in my question unmentioned) knot. (Also, I would argue that the bowline is not a single bit harder to check than figure eight, but that's a matter of taste.)

@Greg.Ley it mostly occurs when I'm attached to a daisy chain (because some gyms require that for whatever reason). When you're belaying 'free' then the tension is almost automatically there, because it feels very weird to have the belay device dangle around on its own.

@Greg.Ley The problem is more that I want to get rid of the 8. I like the yosemite bowline because it feels tight and is said to be safe, but I've learned it from the internet and am a bit scared using it because of that. As for what I'm interested in: anything you can tell me about these. Possible ways of doing them wrong, what's the worst case that can happen and so on. And, as said, hard data on strength would also be nice.
