Personally, I will always use trekking poles with shock-absorbing features because they are much more efficient and comfortable on hard/rocky terrain.

I think there is a decrease between the summer season and the winter season. The opening hours of the visitors centers might also be a good indicator. Some centers might just be open for the week end (= Less people).
