While backpacking, should one bring hand sanitizer, soap, or both? @zoul I have been using a biodegradable for more than one year and it has proven to be very useful. It leaves no trace at all and does not attract insects. I cannot say the same for unscented soap which proved to be irresistible to insects. |

While backpacking, should one bring hand sanitizer, soap, or both? Are you asking this question because you are going to places where water presence is an issue ? |

Running shoes for asphalt + winter conditions? @BenCrowell well I am not a fan of Yaktrax. I am an avid user of microspikes for winter hike outside the city but I do not think they are appropriate for running in winter in a city. |

What kind of mementos, if any, am I allowed to collect from State and National parks in small quantities? It would be nice if the answer was a wiki one so each user could append his knowledge on specific region or country |

How can I physically prepare for high altitude hiking? Being fit is not a waranty of not being altitude sick. It has to do the way you will manage the lack of oxygen. |

Should I be more careful about postholing during winter hikes? Injury is also a big concern. Not be able to finish the hike in a timely manner can be a serious issue specialy if injured |

Should I be more careful about postholing during winter hikes? It will definitely slow you down and this is not a minor issue. To quantify, a person can expect advancing at 5km/h when hiking. This speed will drop at 2.5km/h when snowshoeing. Without snowshoes, this speed is probably much less. |

Are there any exceptions to the layer principle? + 1 : I also like the concept of layering when I am not too sure about the condition. One layer can be easily removed if too warm. |

What is the true risk of suffocation from different combustion sources in a tent? (CO2, CO) I will be curious to know what is the average amount of Co2 produced by a stove vs the average amount of co2 generated by human breathing. My guess would be that stove will win but I heard of people suffocate in closed cars while sleeping. |

Jerky or Freeze-dried food : Is the salt they contain a concern? Interesting but I would say that "adding the proper amount of water" is not always enough. Some of the dehydrated foods that I bought contained more than 75% of the daily salt amount required. This is too much for one meal. |
