comment Hiking: How to start?
To me shoes vs boots is a matter of how uneven the hiking surface is. For anything reasonably called a trail I would always choose shoes (I don't live where snow or mud is a big issue), if the terrain was rocky without a trail I would be inclined towards boots.

comment How far would you need to fall for it to be fatal?
There's also a tail gunner who jumped without a parachute from 18,000 ft. He passed out on the way down and apparently hit a tree and then a deep snowbank--and he did not appear to sustain any additional injuries in the fall.

comment Kilimanjaro expedition - trousers - softshell vs. gore-tex
You really need windproof stuff. The terrain funnels the wind where you're walking.
