comment Why aren't there any electric stoves that can be used for cooking where you can't build a fire?
My guess is that if Germany doesn't want backcountry camping then cooking stoves are probably banned as part of that effort.

There's a difference between open fires and cooking stoves. Are you sure you are not allowed cooking stoves in those places?

comment Programmable handheld/wristworn gps
Why do you want to relate this to a paper map? Any tablet with access to mobile data will display a map of your location. Why is it better to use a paper map?

comment Is there a device to hook anything on a branch?
I would certainly rather carry an S-hook than the rather sharp-looking antler device in the photograph.

What's wrong with a standard S-Hook? I'm assuming there is more to this question than there appears, because S-hooks are extremely common.

comment How would you evaluate sailing lessons for adults?
Hi SkipBerne. We're really looking for more detailed answers than that. Also the OP is looking for sailing instruction. The power squadron safety course won't cover that.

comment What is the aspect ratio of a keel and how does it affect your how your boat sails?
"modern racing boats tend to have fairly square sail designs (higher aspect ratio)". Square sails have lower aspect ratio, as you say elsewhere. I believe other factors are involved in the squareness of racing sails.

Not really because I know nothing about how it affects sailing. However if you're only looking for a definition I could.

"Aspect ratio" is essentially the ratio of width to height - so "A high aspect ratio indicates a long, narrow sail, whereas a low aspect ratio indicates a short, wide sail". Keel is probably similar.

comment Beginner or intermediate skis for a first pair to buy?
I agree with this - however do buy boots. Well-fitting boots make a lot of difference to your enjoyment and ability (more so than skis at this level), and ownership frees you from hours sitting in a rental shop trying to find a pair that really fits you.

comment When should you carry a firearm when hiking/trekking?
However to balance that out, the number of deaths due to bear attacks in the whole of the lower 48 states, in the ten years 2000-2010, is...3!

North American wildlife is significantly more dangerous than European. Bears, wolves, coyotes, lynx, mountain lion (and in the right places, alligators) are all fairly common. I don't believe that changes the answer though.

comment How to get a top-mount cooking burner for 20 lb propane tank?
What is your reason for wanting a top mount? If you are going to haul a 20lb propane tank weight can't be an issue. Why not take a separate stove?

comment Sailing with an infant
Punting on the Cam isn't exactly a challenging water-safety environment. The bank is never more than about twenty feet away, and much of the river you can stand up in.

comment Which type of power boat do I need for overnight trips?
I think this would be better on Great Outdoors, where boating is on topic.
