comment First crampon grade to buy
@Vorac: I meant winter hillwalking in general: Stuff like avalanche awareness, weather and snow conditions, proper boot and ice-axe use, winter navigation, etc..=. But for just crampon use, here's a start: youtube.com/watch?v=NQ_WsqrP6us

@Liam - Ah! I understand the confusion: Andy writers about C1, "C2-", C2 and "C2+" crampons: The +/- grades are his own invention, and I think the crampons he lists as "C2-" (eg Grivel G10) are rated as C1 by the manufacturers. Also the "only the most experienced climbers" bit is about climbing in (what he describes as) C1 crampons. If you plan to climb, or want to be able to climb in an emergency, then C2 makes sense.

There's nothing basically wrong with C1 crampons, and they certainly shouldn't fall off: Grivel G10 is a classic C1 crampon. Not suitable for steep ice, but perfect for winter hillwalking.

comment How effective are portable electric fences?
I thought those were tripwire systems that set off bear bangers or similar pyrotechnics? They don't deliver an electric shock to the bear...?

comment How should I remove a tick?
@Vorac - I believe it's to do with the Tick's feeding cycle. I can't find a definite reference, but I think the risk of disease xfer goes up once they start feeding, and this is typically around 24 hours after you get bitten. Of course, you likely won't know exactly when you got bitten, so soonest is best.

@MattiSG, as long as you're flexible in your plans you'll be fine. Plan B might have to be this, though: tiroran.com

@Rory: True - I did a Winter Skills course based in Ft Bill in early March, and the white stuff was in perilously short supply. (But Wales was bad, too...). As for camping on top of Ben More: Why not? ;-)
