@JamesJenkins Declination is a strange and wonderful thing. Your compass doesn't actually even point at Magnetic North. It just sort of "points".

@KRyan You were in the scouts in 1872?

comment When is the best time of year to find the North Pole?
@Escoce Obvious, maybe : I was assuming that following Polaris only gets you "close", because Polaris isn't actually directly above the geographic north pole. I'm also interested in what margin of error these methods would give.

Without GPS, how do you determine you're there? And if not, which way to travel?

@DanHenderson Interesting. I've never seen a map quite like that. Maybe distory the whole projection so that magnetic north is always 'up'?

comment Is there anything specific required for a dog first aid kit?
Wouldn't bother with a cone in a portable kit. Cone is typically to stop a dog taking out stitches, and you're not going to be sewing up your pooch on the hill.

I always carry tick remover in my own kit. However, I hadn't appreciated that dogs can get Lymes disease as well as humans....

Is this for a home kit, or to carry if you're hillwalking with a dog (for instance?)

@Liam True and Magnetic North are far from the same thing! And "Grid North" is something else again... en.wikipedia.org/wiki/True_north
