What are the most effective ways to start a fire in the cold? Nobody seems to have mentioned it yet, but making a stick "bed" for your fire will raise it off the cold ground and help. The bed also becomes a useful coal bed once it's burning well. |

What is the safest way to purify water? I wouldn't rely on whether the water is clear and flowing. A carcass up river could be rotting away without discolouring the water. I'd always boil water I collect (if possible). |
