A list of suitable foods for a long hike +1 I am hungry now, after reading your answer. Should we copy/paste it to the wiki answer or should it remain here, where it can be upvoted? |

Should you pop a blister? Thanks you very very much for the conformation of the technique. Maybe I should try it some day ;Ppp |

A list of suitable foods for a long hike expanded the post; changed tone to be more neutral (contrasted to the previous first person narrative) |

A list of suitable foods for a long hike "however most dried fruit require more water to may up for things." I see this as a fundamental dilemma - either carry dried light food or carry normal heavy food, but with water inside (including, for example, canned food). Most of the time I prefer the dried variant, as finding water in the woods is much less difficult for me than finding food. |

Group protocol should the group become separated I like this answer, but I would really appreciate some sources of these claims - a search and rescue or military manual for example. Some place that people have thought about this and have established a mandatory policy about such situations. |

If I have to cross an icy, flowing river, what are some ways I can cross safely? About walking in ice water - I have done that - not to cross a river, but for enjoyment. First 30 seconds are cold, then I loose sensitivity and opt to immediately get out. But no frostbites from a 0 degree centigrade water. On the other hand: if you only have one pair of shoes, how do you dry them once on the other side? |

If I have to cross an icy, flowing river, what are some ways I can cross safely? @Ryley Do you prefer heavy boots, filled with ice-cold water when you get to the snow on the other side, or you prefer to have to walk gently in order not to cut your feet. Plus "normal" rivers have rounded stones. |

Group protocol should the group become separated I do not agree with "I wouldn't recommend returning to the point of separation" However, most people I talk to about this, do not agree with me, so possibly I am wrong. Could you please try to persuade me of your thesis. My point is that meeting on the next checkpoint is unsecure, because the groups can take very different routes, have diferrent timings, get lost even more etc. On the other hand, going back seems much safer as we are talking known terrain, known route. |
