@Unsung, you also didn't explicitly mention to hike always alone. And an advice on efficient hiking, which however tears up the group, would be useless IMHO. The "rude" thing was an extremely minor, subjective issue.

@Unsung, my bad. Have you tried this experiment. Find a serious slope, for example a peak, that takes about 1-2 hours to climb. Climb it as you would. Return to the starting point and now climb it in such a way, as not to make any rests on the way, but still travel as swiftly as possible and still be nt any more tired when at the top, the you were climbing it briskly. Compare the times.

This is the correct answer indeed. A couple of suggestions for improvement: 1) The second row from the second paragraph sounds a little rude/boosting to me. 2) More importantly, it would be nice to mention how could a group synchronize their walking, if each person has his own unique rithm.

@Unsung, the idea is not to die of cold/thirst while being blind, vomiting and weak. Id est to reach it easily.

comment I am looking for a two way radio/device with constant contact
@gerrit, it's a gamble. Read the users comments - they are always truthful (or at least good-intended). And you are correct - the items there are not to be relied on, but insane deals do show up. E.g. I got a quality hobby boxing gloves for 1/2 of the price of the cheapest, provided locally. And, free shipping.

@gerrit, dx.com, madeinchina.com etc. are a series of large Chinese online-shops with questionable quality, low prices and free worldwide shipping. Shopping there is close to gambling :D

comment Is playing musical instruments like Harp/Harmonica, Flute unsafe during backpacking trips?
@WedaPashi, I believe they hear through skin and bones (and a google search on "snake hearing") confirms this. Still no idea if this would work :(
