comment What are the different methods to purify water?
Great resource. We were always told to boil for 10 minutes when I was a young backpacker, and that seemed ridiculous.

comment What are the vitamin considerations for extended backpacking
@furtive, absolutely true for 15 days, but for the first few days out or after a resupply it is reasonable as a supplement.

You are incorrect. I did read the question and I spent a mere two sentences in a long response to the worthy response that multi-vits are nothing to avoid before giving many other options.

comment What essential items should go in a small first aid kit?
I'm just saying that you should have it on you if you are doing something dangerous. From a lifesaving perspective, there is no item more important.

comment Do iodine water treatment tablets have negative effects?
Chlorine is also a little harmful... General bactericides kill cells. A ban by Europe or California can be encouraged by politics or lobbying as easily as by science.

Where specifically? It may make a difference.

comment How can I prevent batteries from losing charge in cold weather?
It should be noted that a battery does not lose its charge from being chilled, but simply can't discharge as well until warmed up. Chilling batteries actually prevents them from losing charge.

Out of interest, is that eskabar flat ground? Does it have a bevel on the final edge? Cool knife.

Where do you hike that is so infested? I found these stylish Anti Leech Socks in a google search: mosquitohammock.com/AntiLeechSocks.html

comment Rougher treks with Vibram Fivefingers
For much of the year, yes. Pants in 105° is a no go. :-) I've also been pretty scratched up even with boots off trail, so I figure it would only be worse with 5-fingers.

Forested, hardwood and pine.. Some things to scratch me, such as thorns and poison ivy in VA and pine branches in NY's Adirondacks.
