comment When is the best time of year to find the North Pole?
@JamesJenkins Day and night do not last 3 months at the north pole. They last 6 months. And the period of daylight actually lasts 7–8 months due to twilight

Also consider that the north pole is a very cloudy place where you might well not see the Sun for weeks.

comment I never adjust for true north. Is this bad practice?
Fortunately, measuring latitude is relatively straightforward.

comment Is camping at Zion National Park in mid-December feasible?
Camping with what kind of equipment? Backpacking in a small tent, front-country car camping in medium-sized tent on the official park campground, RV ”camping” on a commercial campground in Springdale...?

comment How to determine the thickness of ice?
@RoryAlsop But water is also likely very shallow at the edge, so falling through at the edge might just get you wet ankles rather than in mortal danger.

comment How to react to cattle charging towards you?
I find hiking in cow country scarier than hiking in bear country. I've never seen a bear but a hike in rural England passes through many fields of cows, and they are curious and do come running at people.

@Liam In the UK, the farmer will kill the dog bothering his livestock. In Texas, the farmer will kill the human bothering his livestock. ;-)

comment Wood versus plastic trail signs?
@ab2 FART is the Ferrovie Autolinee Regionali Ticinesi or the Regional Bus and Rail company of the canton Ticino in the Italian speaking part of Switzerland. The sign I linked points to the Intragna FART station.

comment Walking through an active railway tunnel during a long distance walk
Mountaineers on the Eiger sometimes end up in the Eiger tunnel, such as reported in this account by Mark Seaton and Charles Sherwood who were almost killed, or in this Hollywood account inspired by an earlier adventure.

WALKING through a railway tunnel? I hope the railway is abandoned, if not, is there a special path along with it, or are you suicidal?

comment Why shouldn't I buy an ultra light tent?
Not only does it last longer — it's also a lot more comfortable.
