comment Any tips to reduce chance that I have to get up and pee in the night (not counting dehydration, of course)
I did several years of research at high latitudes where we would spend 2+ months sleeping in tents and keeping a pee-jar in the vestibule is the only way to go.

comment An alternative to geocaching, but with classic maps instead of GPS?
@lechlukasz I am not quite following your map fragment idea... if the cache has coordinates (lat/long, UTM, etc...) you can use any topo map that includes these coordinate systems. So it seems you could easily adapt the current and extensive network of geocaches to your analog approach.
