comment Should I get trekking poles for snowshoeing, or stick with ski poles?
I've broken a carbon pole before -- does that count as bending?

Yes, but windchill alone is insufficient.

Temperature and wind speed individually are more important than wind chill. You won't get frostbite at 33F, no matter how hard the wind is blowing, and you certainly need to dress differently if it's cold and the wind is blowing 40 mph.

comment Backpacking or hiking in areas open to hunting
An orange cap is probably sufficient (2). If you do that and stay on a trail (4) you should be safe. As a courtesy to hunters, it's nice to start out a couple hours after sunrise and finish up an hour or two before sunset.

comment What should you look for when buying hiking socks?
Fungus grow on feet much more than bacteria. Socks don't remove fungus or bacteria, but fungus grows better in moist environments. Cotton socks are fine for day hikes, especially in ventilated tennis shoes.

comment How do you determine how long a hike will take?
Make an estimate based on trail length, elevation gain, physical conditioning, load carried, and weather. Then multiply by 2.
