comment What should you look for when buying hiking socks?
Fungus grow on feet much more than bacteria. Socks don't remove fungus or bacteria, but fungus grows better in moist environments. Cotton socks are fine for day hikes, especially in ventilated tennis shoes.

comment How do you determine how long a hike will take?
Make an estimate based on trail length, elevation gain, physical conditioning, load carried, and weather. Then multiply by 2.

comment Is bear spray effective against other animals?
Works well on people. (Keep the lid on.)

comment If I have to cross an icy, flowing river, what are some ways I can cross safely?
It depends on how deep it and swift it is. If it's dangerous, walk upstream and downstream to find a crossing that's not dangerous.

comment If lost in the wilderness, what is the first thing I should do?
It depends how lost you are, how far away from a road you are, how long you can last in the heat/cold, how much water you have and need, whether you have a communications device, whether people will be looking for you, and etc. In other words, you will need to think things through logically.

You can get a rough prediction after the first observed tide using 6:15 or 12:30 hours between tides.

comment When sailing, how do I rescue a man overboard?
Keeping the man downwind: This depends on the boat and the weather. If it's really windy and wavy, which is the most popular time to fall off a boat, the wind and waves can blow the boat over the top of the MOB. In some cases it is better to approach the MOB from downwind (assuming you're under power), leaving the boat pointed into the wind. This allows the boat to maintain position while the MOB is being hauled on board. If the boat cannot maintain an "into the wind" posture, it might be possible to point downwind and use reverse engine(s) to maintain position.

comment What are the rules for eating raw, wild meat?
Tuna can be served raw without being frozen in the U.S., just not other fish.

comment How long is too long to suffer from constipation in the back country?
If you're in a "pack it out" area for a day or two, a little constipation might be a lucky break! :-) More seriously, severe intestinal cramps can occur at altitude with not too much constipation. Gas needs to get out one way or the other.
