comment I found a Deer Tick on my friend and removed it, what should I do now?
hey, I accidentally edited this post instead of another, and can't undo the edit. hopefully the mods don't approve the edit, but in case they go through, I wanted to explain my dumb move

comment What are some things to keep in mind when stealth camping?
Good points. Hunting is definitely important to consider, and tromping over crops or experiments or preservations is certainly wrong. It seems like some property owners can get a bit overzealous with slicing up chunks of nature for what appears to be no reason other than laying their claim to it, but I can't claim to know everyone's intentions, and either way that's definitely a discussion for elsewhere.

@Russell: But if you're not detected and leaving no trace, what's the harm?

comment What is the best way to cross streams while backpacking?
I second getting a good pair of sandals that work well for both wading and hiking. It's changed how I approach hiking -- you don't have to think twice about rivers, streams, or swamps.

comment Can oiling keep tools from rusting?
If you're using some kind of food-grade oil, something highly saturated and thus less prone to going rancid would be best -- coconut oil may work well for that, plus it's usually solid at room temperature so that may make it easier to apply. I'd imagine a really thin layer of oil after drying a blade thoroughly could be useful if you're going to be storing it for a while, because no matter how clean and dry you make it, there's always water in the air.
