Walker, canoeist, sailer, glider pilot, rock climber and father of 3.

Middle son of a polar explorer, and grew up in the wilds of Orkney and the Falklands - so take after my father in outdoors pursuits.

Happy in the middle of mountains or forests in a tent :-)

comment How should we split up a 3 person tent?
I hear ya @Russell - I liked camping light, but now have a tent that can sleep 12, and that I can park my car in... we only have 3 kids!

comment How to warm up your cold toes and fingers?
'A little screaming' - very true, and if your fingers/toes were close to frostbite this may be a lot of screaming...but this means it is essential you get them warmed up! +1

comment Experiences hiking with a baby: backpacks
Additionally, try a few different models. I got one that is a traditional rucksack construction, with aluminium tubing frame and I find it really comfortable as it puts all the weight on my shoulders, but my wife ended up getting her own one which put the weight more on her hips as that is more comfortable for her.

comment coolest summertime baselayer?
Yep- this is what we use both for long distance running and as a base layer when hiking. Even in colder countries it helps wick away sweat.

comment Trekking poles with many attachments?
In thinking about this, it would seem that it could be better to fit items like camera screws to the other end, keeping the pole point.
