comment Sleeping solutions when camping with dogs?
If you think she needs the comfort, definitely take a blanket or sleeping bag piece for her - wouldn't have thought she would actually need it if you are just under a tarp.

comment How to cope with thorns when hiking barefoot?
If they don't cause you discomfort during the day I would probably wait till the evening, but yeah - needling them out does take a bit of effort. I actually wish I could still hike barefoot, but the skin on my feet has long since softened so I envy you even the annoyance of thorns!

@theJollySin - I asked my SAR mates and they said the same. They do have huge lights on the vehicles/helicopters though, and they all rate the LED Lenser torches.

You'll see from Dude's answer why I was confused. Thanks for clarifying what you meant.

can you describe what you mean - tie what to harness? If you have a picture - give us a link and we can edit it into your question (you will be able to do this yourself when you have more rep)

comment How to estimate the depth of a pool of water from a distance above?
To estimate distances/heights/depths, parallax is very useful. It requires you to move sideways and estimate the difference in what you can see from each point. Basically you use a bit of pythagoras theory to get a close approximation. 3 subjective - yes, but pretty useful in those conditions.
