Walker, canoeist, sailer, glider pilot, rock climber and father of 3.

Middle son of a polar explorer, and grew up in the wilds of Orkney and the Falklands - so take after my father in outdoors pursuits.

Happy in the middle of mountains or forests in a tent :-)

comment What gear for sleeping in wild camping in western Scotland in May?
I took the family camping on Skye the week before last, and it was around 20-22°C every day. At nights I was sleeping in a pair of shorts with no sleeping bag as it just wasn't cool enough to do anything else - it stayed above 10°C at night. Wish it had cooled a bit more :-)

If they have a slot, and one end is fixed, pull a loop through the slot and put this loop over your peg.

comment When do I need a permit to go into nature?
In Scotland, the law of Trespass doesn't exactly exist, so aside from a few specifics, you can hike and camp overnight in most of the countryside.

comment Calculating time until sunset
In Orkney at midsummer, the sun doesn't go down so much as around - only briefly dipping under the horizon to the north. And north of the Arctic circle it won't go down at all in the summer. I wonder if it works at the equator...
