Walker, canoeist, sailer, glider pilot, rock climber and father of 3.

Middle son of a polar explorer, and grew up in the wilds of Orkney and the Falklands - so take after my father in outdoors pursuits.

Happy in the middle of mountains or forests in a tent :-)

Have a look at this question on cross-loading: outdoors.stackexchange.com/q/1384/66 - the 'what not to do' can help indicate what you should do.

You may need to take your own rope too - some small places don't have enough.

comment What are some good games to play with children on hikes?
I would add that if the kids are a bit older, adding points scoring for activities can make it a great competition. My eldest two are quite competitive so they try extra hard to beat each other.

comment What's a good, secure way to attach neodymium magnets to a geocache?
I originally came across this technique for mobile/wireless repeaters for events. Stick the kit and a battery in a sealed box with magnets to affix it to any existing metal pole and run wireless networks from it for the day, then retrieve at end of day and no environmental damage done.

My usual tactic if the whole zip goes is just to strip out the entire zip fabric and replace. You might need a sewing machine but you should be able to do it with just a strong needle and thread.
