Walker, canoeist, sailer, glider pilot, rock climber and father of 3.

Middle son of a polar explorer, and grew up in the wilds of Orkney and the Falklands - so take after my father in outdoors pursuits.

Happy in the middle of mountains or forests in a tent :-)

comment How to estimate current speed and direction at sea?
Yes - without parallax, you are in trouble. Ancient Polynesians used to be able to track wave/ripple patterns to identify their location - not certain that skill is easy to acquire though :-)

I guess it will depend on where you are. If the snow is vertical and heavy, then yes, it could present significant risk to a dome tent as it builds up. If you face drifting snow, the tent is more likely to collapse sideways, probably without the poles snapping.

comment Gloves, but not for keeping warm?
The problem is that as the question stands, a correct answer could be a latex glove, or a thin Nomex glove etc. You need to let us know what it is for otherwise this is not a real question and will probably be closed as such.

I'll have to look at the Infinity 9.5 - hadn't seen that one. Thanks!

comment What hand and finger exercises help with climbing?
They are all just simple steps - the stress balls can be used by anyone, and finger chin-ups and fingertip press-ups are just a logical progression from ordinary ones. Definitely not injurious - I even have my kids doing these now, and they are 10 and 12

comment Features to look for when buying a stove (for car camping)
No - I had worried about this, but even sitting in the highlands cooking for 5 in a storm the one burner was absolutely fine.
