Walker, canoeist, sailer, glider pilot, rock climber and father of 3.

Middle son of a polar explorer, and grew up in the wilds of Orkney and the Falklands - so take after my father in outdoors pursuits.

Happy in the middle of mountains or forests in a tent :-)

comment How harmful is the rising/setting sun?
And just to add - the main reason for this is the amount of atmosphere the sun's rays travel through before they get to you. When the sun is directly overhead you have around 60 miles of atmosphere above you (based on the usual estimate of thickness of atmosphere) but as the sun sets you can have hundreds of miles of atmosphere directly between you and the sun. Also, more of the rays' path is at lower altitude, where air is denser, attenuating the rays even more.

comment Should I leave my boat lift above water or submerged?
+1 this is my experience as well. Keep it out of the water - this is even more important in salt water, but still true for fresh water.

comment The best solution for carrying a D-SLR when hiking
If you are in really cold weather get a holster to keep your batteries in your armpits. My father used to test cameras and batteries in the Antarctic and reckoned it was the only way to get batteries to survive more than a few minutes.

Being married to a nurse I have also seen a sanitary towel used as a very effective dressing for a wound, providing both absorbency and protection.

definitely keep them away from cats - they can shred a good climbing rope in no time!

comment How often should I waterproof a tent?
+1 - I have 6 tents now, ranging from 4 years to 14 years old and have not waterproofed any of them. They all are still waterproof. I think if it doesn't leak, don't bother.
