Walker, canoeist, sailer, glider pilot, rock climber and father of 3.

Middle son of a polar explorer, and grew up in the wilds of Orkney and the Falklands - so take after my father in outdoors pursuits.

Happy in the middle of mountains or forests in a tent :-)

comment Ways of attaching a DSLR on a ACT Trail 32 backpack
My recommendation would always be to have it in your pack, but if you want it on the outside this is pretty solid. I wouldn't worry about not being able to see it.

comment What are the key differences between Mountaineering and Rock Climbing?
I'm not sure this is an answer - but I do really like it. I'm going to tell my climbing buddies.

This question appears to be off-topic because it is actually a misconception of the naming convention.

Your question has the answer. And @furtive's answer clarifies. The ones you are looking at are called this because they are from the Czech Army. Ones from other countries armies are not called Czech beds!

comment How to preserve cheese while backpacking?
Also of some import is: where are you going? In Scotland (and other colder climates) some cheeses can effectively last forever. Certainly longer than a 2 week holiday. I'm maybe not talking about brie, here, but definitely cheddars etc

This question appears to be off-topic because it is not about the great outdoors. It is a question about social interaction.

comment Is a tarp necessary if you have a tent with a rainfly and a footprint?
Packing a wet one won't damage it. Storing it wet will shorten its lifespan though.

comment Hiking boot help
I'd probably side with Ben here - I'm on my second pair of Salomon fell running shoes and they are comfortable, good for hiking or running across country, and are light and easily washable. Their only downside is the kevlar fastening - after a while it starts to slip and I haven't figured out a solution yet
